Close to 400 students from across Canada got involved in the national Anti-Littering Calendar Contest by submitting colourful posters that they felt best encouraged anti-littering behaviour. The contest, which was sponsored by the Environment and Plastics Industry Council, was open to all students from kindergarten to grade eight. It ran from September 2003 to June 2004 and attracted submissions from all across the country. Each submission was judged according to the quality of the message, artistic merit and overall design.
The top 13 winning posters will be used in the 2005 Anti-Littering Calendar, which will be produced by EPIC and distributed to government officials and educators in the fall of 2004. Each of the 13 students responsible for creating the winning submissions will also receive five copies of the 2005 Anti-Littering Calendar.
"We’re very pleased with the quality and quantity of the submissions that we received for this contest," says Cathy Cirko, Director General, EPIC. "The contest demonstrated that the students have a very clear understanding of litter and that they are eager to do their part to help fight litter in our schools, parks and waterways."
