WASTECON concludes successful week

WASTECON 2003 continued in the tradition of previous years, providing attendees with the latest in today’s trends and tomorrow’s emerging technologies, while at the same time providing exhibitors with quality contacts to promote their products and services within the solid waste field.

This year’s Excellence Awards were presented during a Thursday afternoon luncheon. SWANA’s Excellence in Waste Management Awards are designed to acknowledge outstanding members and their programs that are committed to socially, environmentally and economically sound management of solid waste. Waste management facilities throughout North America were honored in ten different categories.

That same evening SWANA presented its annual Awards Banquet recognizing several individuals for their outstanding contributions to municipal solid waste management. The SWANA Professional Achievement Awards, SWANA Robert L. Lawrence distinguished Service Award and the SWANA Life and Honorary Membership Awards were presented to those members who have greatly influenced SWANA and the solid waste community in general.

SWANA’s CEO and Executive Director, Dr. John Skinner, commented, "Both the Excellence Awards and Professional Achievement Awards acknowledge those in the solid waste community who have made incredible strides in promoting SWANA’s mission ‘to advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound management of municipal solid waste’."

The WASTECON 2003 trade show saw an increase in the amount of square footage sold. Overall, keeping with the state of the economy throughout North America, WASTECON experienced a slight decline in overall attendance after a strong 2002 show that saw nearly 4,000 come to Long Beach, California to celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary.

For over 40 years, SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) has been the leading professional association in the solid waste management field. SWANA’s mission is “to advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound management of municipal solid waste.” SWANA serves over 7,000 members and thousands more industry professionals with technical conferences, certifications, publications and a large offering of technical training courses.
