John Skinner, Ph.D., SWANA Executive Director and CEO, announced on Thursday, July 29 SWANA’s support of the U.S. EPA’s recently-announced "Methane to Markets Partnership." Under this partnership, the United States will join efforts with countries around the globe to boost the recovery and use of methane gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing significant environmental benefits.

Kent Drinker, senior manager of SWANA’s Technical Divisions, was an invited guest at the press conference announcing the partnership.

"SWANA is pleased to join with U.S. EPA and its Landfill Methane Outreach Program, as well as the U.S. Department of Energy in supporting this new partnership to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions from human sources," Drinker said. "SWANA’s Landfill Gas Technical Division actively promotes the recovery and utilization of landfill gas as a valuable, clean-burning, renewable energy source that directly benefits the local economy by creating jobs and establishing a reliable long-term source of energy generating capacity."

Skinner commented, "SWANA is excited to be a part of a program that has such potential to improve our environment. We’re pleased to see so many countries acknowledge something the solid waste field has known for years: that landfill gas-to-energy projects are safe, efficient and environmentally sound methods of generating energy as an alternative to burning oil or coal."
