"SARSstock" waste tally
A little over a week ago, on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 approximately 900,000 people attended the Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto mega-concert featuring performers such as the Rolling Stones, ACDC, and Justin Timberlake. The concert provided a great amount of economic and social support for the city that was rocked with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) over the past several months.
According to the Toronto Star, waste collected at the concert venue included four million empty water bottles and 150 tonnes of waste. The cleanup crew utilized 70 pieces of equipment, from sweepers to blowers and vacuums. The strangest news item found during cleanup was a hair dryer.
Toronto-based Triwaste Services Inc. donated approximately $100,000 in cleanup services.
