Recycling at the Olympics
The Olympic organizing committee for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah has implemented a two-bin collection system to encourage and facilitate recycling. One bin is for bottles and cans, and another is for all other waste. Toter Inc. of Statesville, North Carolina provided 8,000 bins, which will be checked and emptied at regular intervals.
In addition to the committe’s efforts, Coca-Cola aims to recycle every polyethylene terephthalate bottle recovered at the Games. This will be the first Olympics event in which all the bottles recovered will be reused to make new bottles.
The Games, which run from February 8 – 24, expect to attract approximately 75,000 visitors per day, 3,500 athletes and officials, and 10,000 media reps.
