Nfld. tire recycling program
On February 6, 2002, Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman announced the implementation of a recycling program for used tires. Based on a proposal call issued by the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board in April 2001, Municipal Recyclers Limited (MRL) of Argentia was awarded a contract for the collection, transportation and processing of used tires in the province. The principal objective of the program is to ensure that used tires generated in the province are disposed of without negatively affecting the environment. MRL will also be responsible for establishing collection sites, for processing the used tires into crumb rubber, and for marketing and selling its processed product.
Approximately 500,000 tires are disposed of each year in Newfoundland and Labrador. The government is implementing a ban on the disposal of used tires in landfill sites and a levy on the sale of new tires effective April 1, 2002.
