Residential burning of garbage accounts for the largest quantifiable source of dioxin (a known carcinogen) in North America. A group of regulatory, environmental, industry, governmental and educational organizations around the Great Lakes region is working to decrease this release of dioxins into the environment.
The Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention (C2P2) recently developed the new Great Lakes Trash and Open Burning web site — www.openburning.org — in collaboration with members of the Burn Barrel Sub-Group of the Great Lakes Binational Toxics Strategy. The web site provides information, studies, suggested strategies, educational materials, key contacts, and more.
