Imperial Oil to build new co-generation plants

Imperial Oil recently announced that it intends to build a 90-megawatt co-generation facility at its Sarnia refining and petrochemical complex. The new unit, which will use natural gas fired turbines to produce electricity and steam, is expected to use approximately 50 per cent less energy than conventional systems. The cost of the complex is about $120-million.

Engineering for the product is underway, with construction scheduled to begin late this year. Startup is planned for April 2004.

According to the company, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions will be reduced when the plant takes over most of the site’s steam production from existing boilers.

The Sarnia plant will be the company’s second major co-generation facility. The company is in the process of constructing a 170-megawatt co-generation plant at its Cold Lake, Alberta operations.
