Hamilton Bio Conversion Inc. fined $10,000

Hamilton Bio Conversion Inc., a waste disposal site in Hamilton, has been fined $10,000 after pleading guilty to two counts under the Environmental Protection Act.

The company pled guilty to one count of failing to comply with its Certificate of Approval by failing to ensure all waste is unloaded, processed and stored indoors on October 17, 2000 and was fined $5,000 plus a victim fee surcharge. The company also pled guilty to one count for the same condition on October 23, 2000 and was fined $5,000 plus a victim fee surcharge. Failing to comply with a Certificate of Approval is a violation of Section 186(3) of the Environmental Protection Act.

The charges relate to a Ministry of the Environment inspection that revealed that the company had allowed a quantity of fatty material that had been spilled in the company’s parking lot to enter Red Hill Creek via a catch basin. Hamilton Bio Conversion Inc. has since ceased operations at this site.

The case was heard in Hamilton court by Justice of the Peace Ross.
