Dombrowsky to become new Ontario Environment Minister

Today, Ontario’s new Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty will be sworn in and will appoint his cabinet. Eastern Ontario MPP Leona Dombrowsky is expected to become the province’s new environment minister.

Ms. Dombrowsky, MPP for Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington, is on record as supporting Mr. McGuinty’s statement during the recent election that he supports people opposed to a proposed expansion of the Richmond Landfill and will stop an appeal by the environment ministry over a court decision that ruled in favor of the landfill expansion opponents.

The local NDP has accused Ms. Dombrowsky of supporting industrial hog mega-farms in Eastern Ontario, which have been associated with rural pollution elsewhere (e.g., Quebec).

These are two issues that will be interesting to watch after she is appointed.
