Changes to B.C. environment ministries
The British Columbia government has embarked on a three-year restructuring plan to reduce government spending. For the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection (WLAP) and for the Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management (SRM) there will be budget cuts of 24 per cent and 37 per cent respectively. The WLAP plan focuses on the development of environmental standards, public reporting and less emphasis on direct delivery of services and advice. The most significant initiative will be a major reform of B.C.’s current environmental assessment process. The SRM plan focuses on efficiency and streamlining functions in its core business areas, such as land use planning and land and water management.
