Cavendish Farms asks growers not to use PEI compost

Cavendish Farms of Saint John is asking growers not to use compost product from Prince Edward Island’s new $30-million Island Waste Manamgent Corp. facility. The company warned growers of “major potential food hazards.”

Dwayne McNeill of Cavendish Farms wrote a letter to growers saying inspections carried out by the producer of frozen potato products found foreign minerals — including glass and metal — at the Brookfield waste management facility. According to Mr. McNeill, the use of this compost could create a major risk to processing tuber crops.
