Canadian Association of Recycling Industries convention

The Canadian Association of Recycling Industries (CARI) 62nd annual convention, general meeting and exhibition were held on June 14 to 16 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Approximately 175 delegates gathered to attend various sessions, meet exhibitors of equipment and services from 16 companies, golf at the Sherwood Golf and Country Club, and partake in the AGM.

At the "Running Your Business" breakfast David Bradley, president of the Ontario Trucking Association, attendees received an informative presentation about the issues of trucking and particularly board crossing concerns. Thomas Mele, president of the Connecticut Metal Industries, and chair of the ISRI Non-ferrous Specifications Committee addressed changes to the ISRI specifications and offered the opportunity to comment of future changes. David Ben concluded the formal portion of the convention with an entertaining presentation to reveal how creative problem solving was one way to "Navigate the Times." He used magic and the explanation of tricks to show how thinking outside the box helps solve problems.

At the AGM CARI members approved a revision of the by-laws with the major change being the creation of two standing committees: the Policy and Planning Committee and the Operations Committee. CARI Executive Director Len Shaw reported that membership to date in 2003 increased by 9 per cent to 192.

The convention concluded with a banquet, which featured the Grafton Street Dinner Theatre assisted by the singing of CARI Convention Chair Marvin Rosenshien and dancing of Past President Yves Beaudoin.

The next convention will be held at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C. on June 5 to 7, 2004.
