Barrie Metals Group of Companies has been named a 2005 winner of Canada’s Best Managed Companies award. The award is sponsored by Deloitte, CIBC Commercial Banking, National Post, and Queen’s School of Business.

David Mills, a spokesman for Barrie, said that that about 2,500 companies initially applied for the award. From that list a more in-depth interview reduced the pool of candidates down to around 200, and further discussions resulted in the top 50 companies in Canada.

“The 2005 Best Managed winners are an outstanding group of Canadian-owned and managed companies that have proven their remarkable ability and commitment to apply best practices to all areas of their business operations,” said Tony Grnak, Deloitte partner and National Leader, Canada’s Best Managed. “These companies clearly demonstrate innovation, leadership and a laser focus on their customers and employees. Their example illustrates that focusing on business fundamentals while pursuing a clearly defined strategy is key to achieving exceptional results.”

Barrie Metals has created and promotes a strategy that has allowed the company to be a one-stop facility for electric and electronic equipment processing.

BMG operates two industrial supply stores and steel distribution centers under the Automatic Steel branding. Products and services are provided to industry and consumers in the way of steel, tools and metals. The company has been in business for 21 years.

BMG also provides a complete range of ferrous and non-ferrous recycling capabilities to a variety of suppliers. The company’s “Best Materials Management Practices” incorporates value-added processes to produce high quality materials. In-house commodity trading allows for the company to negotiate intrinsic material values, in real-time.

Mills says that one of the programs that Barrie has excelled at is constantly looking at ways the company partners up with various services.

“If we can’t do it ourselves we will look for a partner,” Mills says.

Established in 1993, the Best Managed award is a national program, recognizing Canadian companies that have implemented world-class business practices and created value in innovative ways. Applications are reviewed by an independent judging panel that evaluates how companies address various business challenges, including new technologies, globalization, and leadership.
