Alberta tire recycling milestone (October 31, 2001)

Alberta’s tire recycling industry recently reached a major milestone as it recycled its 20-millionth tire. Tire Recycling Management Association (TRMA) Chair Sid Hinton joined Premier Ralph Klein and Albert Environment Minister Lorne Taylor to celebrate in Edmonton’s Wilbert McIntyre Park, a site that uses recycled rubber products, on September 5, 2001. The Tire Recycling Program was initiated in 1992 to rid the province’s landfills of stockpiles of scrap tires. Today, most stockpiles have been eliminated and approximately three million scrap tires are recycled annually. There are a growing number of businesses in the province that recycle the tires into various products, including rubber crumb. The TRMA estimates that Albertans have saved approximately $100-million by not having to landfill 20 million tires.
