Waste & Recycling

Recycling Council of British Columbia offers pandemic updates

VANCOUVER – The Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) is providing updated COVID-19 related information to the public from service suppliers and municipalities as it becomes available.

During this public health emergency, BC’s primary source of public information on waste and recycling, the BC Recycling Hotline, remains open to answer waste and recycling related questions. Environmental Advisors are available Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm to answer questions directly. In the Lower Mainland: 604-732-9253 (604-RECYCLE) BC Toll Free: 1-800-667-4321.

RCBC also provides an online Recyclepedia on its rcbc.ca website to answer the most common questions. There are links there to download the free Recyclepedia phone app for both Android and Apple platforms.

Recycling Depots: Some recycling depots have temporarily closed, while others are operating at reduced hours. If you are visiting a depot, please call ahead, or reach out the BC Recycling Hotline for up-to-date information on your local recycling centre.

Curbside Recycling Collection: For most communities, curbside recycling collection is provided by Recycle BC. For information on changes to curbside recycling collection, please visit Recycle BC’s website at recyclebc.ca/covid19.

Curbside Garbage Collection: To help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect waste collection staff, please ensure that all personal hygiene products, including used tissues, cleaning cloths, face masks, gloves, and similar items are disposed of in the garbage. Garbage bags should be tied securely and disposed of as regular residential garbage.

If you’re sick or caring for someone who is sick: all personal waste should be double bagged in plastic garbage bags; securely tie all bags shut and dispose of as regular residential garbage.

Please do not visit and recycling depots or solid waste facilities if you are in quarantine or self-isolation related to COVID-19. This is to protect the health and safety of staff and the public.

The BC Recycling Hotline will remain in operation throughout this public health emergency. RCBC staff are operating the system remotely to comply with BC Health Officer Bonnie Henry’s direction. This measure ensures their safety while providing British Columbians with full service levels. Please call the Hotline for information or email us your questions at hotline@rcbc.ca.
