QUEBEC – Waste Connections, Inc. has purchased two Lion8 chassis with fully automated side load bodies from the Lion Electric Co. (Lion) and Boivin Evolution (BEV) partnership.
The introduction of these electric vehicles into markets in Vancouver, Washington, and Miami, Florida, by the end of 2020 will represent the first applications of zero-emission trucks with fully electric waste collection bodies and automated arms in North America.
Developed for the electric market, the combination of the Lion8 chassis and the BEV all-electric automated side-loading body offers a cost-effective waste management solution, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
For Waste Connections, this investment furthers its sustainability efforts and is consistent with its commitment to growing and expanding its environmental initiatives through technology and innovation.

The trucks have a range of 130 miles for a full day of operation (1,200 homes) on a single charge of 252kW. By recharging overnight when electricity rates are lower, the trucks can realize up to 80 percent savings on total energy costs.
They make zero greenhouse gas emissions and no noise pollution.
With no hydraulic pumps, valves, tubing, hoses or fluids, and the low-maintenance electric motors, the trucks have potentially 60 percent lower service costs. All arm and body movements are powered by the battery that drives electric motors for each function.
Patrick Gervais, vice-president of communications and marketing for Lion said the company is in discussions about possible Canadian purchases of BEV trucks.
